JUPITER, FL – August 30, 2017 – Getting preventive care is one of the most important steps you can take to manage your health. That’s because when a condition is diagnosed early, it is usually easier to treat. Preventive health screenings are an affordable and effective way to identify hidden disease risk. For many people, getting screened is the first step in early intervention to prevent potential health events later in their lives. It helps people understand their risks so that they can consult with their doctor and take the right steps towards a healthier future.

First and foremost, it is important to discover what preventive screenings are offered and how often to get them since the field of healthcare is constantly evolving. With early detection of risk factors pertaining to specific health problems, lower disease rates, and reduced employer healthcare costs are feasible.

The following health screenings are available right at Jupiter Medical Center:

» Mammogram

An x-ray exam of the breast that is used to detect and evaluate breast changes. Jupiter Medical Center follows American Cancer Society guidelines for early detection of breast cancer, which state yearly mammograms are recommended starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health. This screening is covered by insurance. No physician prescription is necessary; you may self-refer.

» Coronary CT Angiography (CCTA)

A non-invasive heart-imaging test for determining whether fatty deposits or calcium deposits have built up in the coronary arteries – thus, screening for heart disease. This screening is not covered by insurance. Cost is $399, and includes the radiologist’s interpretation.

» Colonoscopy

Involves the use of a special scope used to find, evaluate and treat abnormalities in the colon. A colonoscopy is a primary method physicians use to screen for and prevent colon cancer. American Cancer Society screening guidelines recommend beginning at age 50 for both men and women, and repeating every ten years. This screening is covered by insurance, but a physician prescription is required.

» CT Lung Screening

A CT scan of the lungs for detection of any diseases of the chest and lung. National Lung Screening Trial guidelines include: current or former heavy smokers; 55 to 75 years old; less than 15 years since quitting; and no signs, symptoms or a personal history of cancer. This screening is not covered by insurance. Cost is $99, and includes consultation with the radiologist, the exam and radiologist’s interpretation, and a consultation with the thoracic surgeon (if needed).

» Vascular Screening

Ultrasound screening of the arteries to detect the risk for stroke, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and peripheral arterial disease. Cost is $180 for the screening package, and includes the radiologist’s interpretation. AAA screening exams are covered by Medicare for patients who meet certain criteria.

» Osteoporosis Screening

Bone mineral density testing (specifically a densitometry or DEXA scan) measures how much bone you have. A physician uses this test to predict the risk for future bone fractures. This screening is recommended for women over the age of 60 depending on certain risk factors. This screening is covered by insurance, but a physician prescription is required.

Consult with your physician about which screenings yourself or your family members should consider. Preventive health screenings can be the key to eliminating future health issues. For more information on health screenings available at Jupiter Medical Center, please call (561) 263-4437.
